CIRITICIZING

Hi God,

This is Kelley.

I’m throwing rocks again, criticizing a certain group of people. What do I do that for? Does it make me feel superior? It just keeps me from admitting that we’re all full of holes; we’re all walking around with dirt on us. Why do I pretend I’ve got less dirt on me than someone else does?

“Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? … First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye.”(New Testament and Psalms: An Inclusive Version)

We need to be critical, discerning what is good and what is better. We need to know how to spot that which is headed in an evil direction. We’re not allowed to just put our eyes down and concentrate on ourselves — You didn’t tell us to take the log out of our own eye and leave it at that. We’re in this for all of us.

This is a fine line we walk, Lord, as followers of You. Teach me, Lord, to be critical without being mean. Show me how to discern without condemning. And always, Lord, remind me to be working on myself.
