ELMHURST CLASS OF 1959 HOLDS 60TH REUNION
On Saturday, September 14, 2019, the Elmhurst High School graduating class of 1959 held their 60th class reunion. We are one of the first few classes to hold a reunion since the final bricks came tumbling down and the building was no more! However, in the hearts of a lot of those who spent time there, the spirit of what we took from that experience remains with us still. Some might call it a sense of community spirit.
In the past we would meet at a local hotel, where we would have a Friday evening social event. Then on Saturday evening we would dress in our best, and enjoy a fine dinner, and maybe some entertainment. In recent years one of our members, who owns a beautiful home and farm north of Fort Wayne, offered us her place as a location to hold our reunions, in a more casual setting. It couldn’t have been more perfect. After having a catered meal, along with homemade pies, we ended the evening sitting around a big campfire reminiscing.
We began with a graduating class of 161, but we have dwindled to 101. Of that number 36 graduates, along with their spouses, were in attendance. Although the school no longer stands, our centerpieces on the tables consisted of beautifully wrapped bricks from the school, that represents a small part of big beginnings for many. It could have the feeling of having a relative’s ashes on the mantle, but several have a special place to showcase their brick.
The highlight of the evening was when, as we were departing, one of our classmates was leaving the reunion driving his well-preserved 1955 tan Volkswagen, equipped with a sunroof and turn signal. He told us the story about how that car came out on the market the first year we began attending Elmhurst for the 8th grade. He purchased it in 1967 and has owned and driven it throughout the years since that time. He felt it was only fitting that he drive it to our 60th class reunion.
We all agreed!
