2018 WAYNE HS ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

The 3rd annual Induction Ceremony for the Wayne High School Athletic Hall of Fame was held January 19, 2018 at Wayne High School. The Hall of Fame Committee members wanted to honor former student athletes, coaches, contributors and teams who have helped build the tradition of athletic and academic excellence at Wayne High School.

Gary Raber, Athletic Director, welcomed everyone and thanked the Hall of Fame committee members for their hard work, dedication and commitment to continue this tradition at the banquet reception.

Principal, John Houser had the honor of introducing the 2018 Class of Wayne Athletic Hall of Fame members:

Steve Bates
A 1977 graduate who participated in basketball, was named 2nd team All-State and to the All-City team. Accepted scholarship to U of Arkansas where he played under assistant coach Gene Keady. He transferred to Michigan State U as a redshirt transfer on the 1978-1979 National Championship team led by Magic Johnson. Steve currently resides in Marion, IN.

Kevin Craig
A 1998 graduate who ran track and played football. He was on the 1995 State Champion Football team, was the 1995 State Champion in the 200-meter dash and was the state runner-up of the 100-meter dash for several years. Craig was voted “Amateur of the Year” during his senior year from Track and Field for the State of IN. Was inducted into the Track and Cross Country Coaches “Hall of Fame” in Terre Haute, IN.

Alan Eldridge
A 1995 graduate who participated in basketball. He led the SAC conference in scoring. Eldridge was named to the All-Conference team. Played at Purdue U and was a 3-year starter and team captain in 1999. Eldridge currently resides in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Charlie Greer
A 23-year Wayne High School employee in the custodial department, 21 years as head custodian. Always smiling, this gentleman dressed in Columbia blue and red, volunteered his time at various functions. He was also known for founding a dance group called “Charlie’s Angels”. His positive attitude was contagious; he made everyone who knew him feel better about life. Mr. Greer passed away at the age of 63, in 2010.

Murray Mendenhall
Coach Mendenhall was a long-time coach and teacher, as well as, athletic director at Wayne High School. He was named Area Coach of the Year two times. Was Indiana All-Star Coach in 2007. He coached not only basketball but also golf and football. Mr. Mendenhall retired in 2009 and currently lives in Fort Wayne.

Sybil (Perry) Caruthers

Ms. Caruthers track abilities won her 6 State Championships. She still holds the school record for the 400M at 55.78. She continued her track career at Purdue U. As the 5 time All-American, she still holds the Big Ten record in the 400M hurdles. She was also semi-finalist at the Olympic trials. Ms Caruthers resides in San Antonio, Texas.
