ENGELMANN’S CELEBRATE 70TH ANNIVERSARY
Sylvester and Sylvia (King) Engelmann of Fort Wayne were married on December 24, 1939 at Zions Lutheran Church, Defiance, Ohio, with Rev. Hofer officiating. They both graduated from Defiance High School in 1937 and 1938. Their maid of honor was Betty Hohenberger and usher Ed Yeutter, both from Defiance, are still living.
The couple will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Fort Wayne. The couple have four children: Beverly Gloyd, Robert and Sylvester Jr. from Fort Wayne and Cynthia of Largo, Florida. They also have 10 grandchildren, with Troy deceased in 1986, and 10 great-grandchildren.
After getting married in Defiance, the couple moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where Syl worked for the Glen L. Martin Aircraft Co. After 5 years with Martin, Syl went into the Navy working on airplanes in the Marshall Islands. After discharge from the Navy, Syl worked at several jobs and ended up going to I.I.T. College graduating with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering. He then worked for the G. E. Company for 31 years, retiring in 1982. Sylvia always has been a loving wife, mother and homemaker.
Sylvester and Sylvia joined the Avion Travelcade Club in 1978 and have been members for over 30 years. They traveled all over the United States with 3 months in Alaska in 1993 with 30 other Avion-airs. They also took a trip into Mexico with their trailer in the Travelcade group. Their travels were in the south during the winter months and in the north in the summertime. Today, Syl and Syl spend the summer months in Fort Wayne with family and friends and go to Largo, Florida to be with Cindy and friends during the winter months.
