Plein Air Paint Out
Plein air painting, an artistic tradition dating back centuries, is French for painting in the open air, making use of natural light and shadows with the enjoyment of nature, landscape and the great outdoors.

For a “Plein Air Paint-Out”, the artists have a regulated number of hours they are allowed to paint, and then return within that time frame for judging. We have given the participating plein air artists a dozen or so suggested locations, though they are free to choose their own. They invite you to stop and watch them paint. Go to the Artists page for an application. Registration and judging will be at Crestwoods Framing on Main Street.

History
The Roanoke Arts Council was established in 2008 to encourage greater appreciation for the fine arts in the greater Roanoke community. To date seven annual events have been staged by the organization. A Renaissance in Roanoke, an outdoor, juried art show and sale brought the limit of 47 artists. They were joined by a Plein Air competition for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students from Roanoke Elementary School, an open Plein Air competition, and a collegiate art show and sale (cash prizes were awarded in all the competitions). In 2013 we inaugurated a college art competition with a scholarship of $1000 being awarded. In all, well over 100 artists competed in all the events. Entertainment has varied and each year children’s art activities were provided.
