PAID SENATE INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE – Straight From The Senate

Every year, the Indiana Senate offers college students, recent graduates and graduate students a career-boosting opportunity – the chance to intern during a legislative session at the Indiana Statehouse.

Interns are vital to the legislative process, as nearly every office in the Senate relies on them to complete important tasks during session. At the same time, interns benefit from hands-on experience, community involvement, networking, optional academic credit and professional development.

Many interns even go on to work for the Senate or in public service. More than 80 percent of our staff are former interns, and State Sen. Erin Houchin (R-Salem) was a former Senate Republican intern herself.

Internships are offered with both the Republican and Democratic caucuses. Candidates interested in working with the Republican caucus can apply for positions in a variety of offices, including legal, legislative, policy, communications, multimedia and information technology.

Legal interns conduct legal and policy research, file legislative documents under deadline, summarize amendments and conference committees and help create a daily legislative calendar.

Legislative interns conduct policy research, track and examine bill data, provide constituent services and staff committee meetings.

Policy interns track legislative proposals, conduct research and summarize legislation.

Press Secretary interns write news releases, draft e-communication and social media strategies, work with members of the media and track legislation.

Multimedia interns help with photography and videography needs, monitor online streaming of committees and Senate floor sessions, create content for print and web and assist in website management.

Information Technology interns respond to IT needs of senators and staff, troubleshoot hardware and software issues, assist in the implementation of new technologies and reformat and reimage computers.

Chosen applicants will work at the Statehouse beginning with a mandatory orientation in late December and concluding at the end of the legislative session in mid-to-late March. They will receive a $750 bi-weekly stipend.

All majors are accepted, but interns must be at least a college sophomore. Applications are due by Oct. 31.
