All are welcome! The Community Garden seeks to provide fresh, wholesome, locally grown produce to those in the Huntington Community who have limited access to it. This summer, weather permitting, the garden will be open the same hours as last year: Mondays from 4-6pm, Wednesdays from 10am-12pm, and Saturdays from 10am-12pm. At those times, staff from the Purdue Extension Huntington County office, as well as other volunteers, are available to help visitors harvest the produce, answer gardening questions, weigh produce, etc. This season a Nutrition Educator from Purdue Extension will be present most Mondays and Wednesdays to offer recipes and tips for preparing the fresh produce visitors take home. Community members who desire to volunteer at the garden and harvest fresh produce are asked to come only during posted harvest hours, or make other arrangements by contacting the Purdue Extension Office at 260-358-4826.
This summer, visitors will find sweet onions, red and gold potatoes, sugar snap peas, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, kohlrabi, peppers, tomatoes, okra, green beans, beets, herbs, kale, lettuce, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow summer squash, acorn and butternut squashes and eggplant planted at the garden. It has been a challenging spring with the excessive rainfall, but Extension staff and volunteers are doing their best to bring the Huntington Community a garden full of delicious, nutritious fresh vegetables.
The garden is located next to Huntington North High School on Viking Lane near the intersection with Jefferson Street. Parking is available in the lot adjacent to the High School on the west side of the garden.
Purdue Extension would like to thank the faithful volunteers who work hard to help plant and maintain the garden and prepare it for harvest. Special thanks also to the Huntington County Extension Homemakers for their donations of supplies for the garden, to Crop Production Services for supplying needed fertilizer and to the City of Huntington for providing access to city water. If you or your organization are interested in volunteering your time or other resources, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for information on how you can serve your neighbors through giving to the Community Garden. We would love to have you grow with us!
