KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK WAYNEDALE! – Message From The Mayor

The City of Fort Wayne and IPFW are partnering to develop a mobile app for people who use our greenways and trails system. Computer Science Senior Capstone Teams at the university are working with the Greenways & Trails Department on an app to help collect data on trail usage and conditions.

Users who create an account would be able to provide information to the City about maintenance items or safety concerns. For instance, after a severe storm, trail users could send photos where trees have fallen across the trail. The information would have GPS coordinates and be time stamped. The next steps are to address security issues and then thoroughly test the app before it is released.

Dr. Beomjin Kim, project advisor and professor and chair of computer science at IPFW and 2016-17 Capstone Team members Austin Wolfe (B.S. ’17), Justin Chadwell (senior, computer science), Brendan Fullenkamp (senior, computer science), and Neil Rawlins (B.S. ’17), worked with City of Fort Wayne employees James Haley, Dawn Ritchie and Amy Hartzog on the project.

The City of Fort Wayne appreciates and values the partnership with IPFW. This app will be valuable to our Volunteer Greenway Rangers, as well as trail users who want to report maintenance concerns to the City in a user-friendly, convenient manner.

The project is set to continue through the 2017-18 academic year.

Fort Wayne continues to receive positive recognition as we’ve been named an “Ability City” by Ability Indiana. The designation recognizes Fort Wayne’s long-standing commitment to supporting the employment of individuals with disabilities at employment centers across the greater Fort Wayne area.

I was joined at a recent announcement by officials from Ability Indiana, elected officials, community leaders and several local organizations to demonstrate a collective commitment to ensuring individuals with disabilities have opportunities for employment and success.

Being an Ability City speaks volumes about our commitment to being a caring, giving and welcoming community. Fort Wayne is a leader in job and business growth. It’s because companies and organizations in our City have stepped up to include and embrace individuals with disabilities to be part of our local employment base.

Ability Indiana, Inc. is a 501 (c) authorized by state statute (IC 5-22-13) to give state and local government entities the mechanism to contract with employment centers without going through the public bidding process. Thanks to everyone who attended the recent public meeting in Waynedale to provide input on a plan to improve the corridors around the intersection of Bluffton and Lower Huntington roads.

The proposed plan addresses four key goals:
1. Improving connectivity and safety for all modes of transportation
2. Developing streetscape enhancements
3. Encouraging zoning that is compatible with the neighborhoods
4. Enhancing the Waynedale brand to highlight the area and business community’s identity, history and pride

The plan was developed through a process that included community surveys, stakeholder meetings, field assessments and review of best practices.
