WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH A DIRTY OR TORN FLAG?
Everything from properly folding to flying a flag correctly is presented in the United States Flag Code outlines. It even describes how to retire an American flag respectfully.
The Code states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
So, when your flag is torn and worn out beyond repair, it is time to retire it.
There are several ways to respectfully dispose of the American flag without showing disgrace. The most common method is burning the torn and/or tattered flag in a special ceremony.
The Veterans Department of Affairs suggests starting by folding the flag in a customary triangle manner. Then prepare a large fire space to sufficiently burn the flag completely. Next place the flag in the fire and while it burns, individuals at the ceremony should salute or recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Finally, ending the ceremony with a moment of silence and burying the ashes once the flag(s) are completely consumed.
Dirty flags may be cleaned, slightly torn flags may be mended, but badly torn, or extremely dirty flags should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning.
In Waynedale, on Saturday, May 23, at noon, American Legion Post #241 will be holding a Flag Disposal Ceremony. You are welcome to bring your retired flag to the ceremony.
