HELP END VETERAN SUICIDE
A local veteran-owned company is spending the month of May raising $2,000 to help end Veteran suicide. American Guerrilla which also owns Guerrilla CrossFit, a local CrossFit gym, is owned by a local Veteran Justin Springer. Justin spent 6 years in the Army including a 12-month tour in Iraq in 2003-2004. Since coming back to Fort Wayne he has focused his efforts not only on fitness but helping out Veterans through entrepreneurship efforts and fundraising.
His website (www.american-guerrilla.com) states; “Our Mission is to Honor, Support and Promote America’s Veterans.” He operates a podcast and blog that highlights Veteran issues and Veteran owned companies while selling apparel and cool gear that supports people directly affected by war and conflict.
The fact of the matter is; everyday 22 veterans commit suicide. That means during the month of May around 682 Veterans will take their own lives. The VA has been under harsh criticism over the last several years as they strive to improve their relations with Veterans that have invisible wounds. A by-product of the VA’s inability to meet demand has spawned several Veteran-Owned non-profits helping to curb the issue. One of which is stopsoldiersuicide.org, started by a Veteran, Brian Kinsella.
While on active duty, the now-CEO Brian Kinsella encountered military suicide firsthand. Within a few months of his first assignment, one of his own Soldiers attempted to take her own life. The suicide attempt was unsuccessful, but it made a lasting impact. Later, a fellow Soldier took his life only days before a deployment and Brian knew something had to be done.
Springer and his organization, American Guerrilla, are focusing their efforts in the month of May to raise $2,000 for the organization.
