TEEN BUILT LRWP PICNIC AREA FOR EAGLE PROJECT
On July 27, 2014 Ben Steyer of Fort Wayne, received his Eagle Scout designation at a Court of Honor conducted by Boy Scout Troop 349, held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Fort Wayne. Friends, family and troop leaders attended the celebration, including his parents Marvin and Benita Steyer.
Ben said that achieving his Eagle Scout Award is one of his proudest accomplishments.
Scoutmaster Chad Tranter of Boy Scouts of America Troop 349, Miami District, Anthony Wayne Area Council, reported that Ben Steyer was awarded the Eagle Scout designation after he completed an Eagle Scout project and was reviewed by an Eagle Scout Board consisting of area Scoutmasters and Boy Scout leaders.
This young man’s Eagle Scout project was to lead Troop 349 in building a picnic area for the Little River Wetlands Project, at the Arrowhead Prairie on Aboite Road in southwest Allen County. The picnic area is 24 ft. x 16 ft. and includes mulch and two picnic tables. It is open to the public to picnic, study and observe the natural prairie or hike the trails.
Ben became a Boy Scout with Troop 349 March 19, 2007. Ben is a member of the Kiskakon Lodge Order of the Arrow (OA), Scouting’s National Honor Society, a select group of young men recognized by Scouts as exemplifying the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives.
Steyer received a certificate of membership in the National Eagle Scout Association, and commendation letters from His Holiness Pope Francis, Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades, the White House, three past Presidents, and former Governor Mitch Daniels. As is tradition with Troop 349 an American flag was flown over our nations’ capital building on July 27th in honor of Ben, and will be presented to him at a later date.
Dean Wilkening of Troop 349 placed an eagle star quilt over Ben’s shoulders as a special recognition of his Eagle Scout award. The quilt was a gift given to Troop 349 from the Lakota Indians of the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation town of Bear Creek, South Dakota and is traditionally displayed at the Troop’s Court of Honors.
A graduate of Homestead High School, Ben will be attending IPFW Doermer School of Business studying Accounting. Ben’s parents said that his achieving Eagle Scout shows his determination to complete a project and his value of citizenship and community service.
Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program. Fewer than five percent of Boy Scouts nationwide attain this illustrious rank.
