ANTHONY WAYNE ROTARY 5K TO STOMP OUT POLIO

Every year one hundred plus walkers and runners descend on Shoaff Park the second Saturday in August to help Rotarians put an end to polio. This year is no exception. The sixth annual Walk Run to Eradicate Polio will take place on August 16th at 8:30am and all proceeds will go to Rotary International’s program to end polio worldwide.

What is special about this campaign is its backing by the Gates Foundation which matches each donation 2-1. This is Anthony Wayne Rotary’s largest fundraiser for the polio effort and every dollar goes to this cause.

Rotary International started their first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979 and, although it is rarely a thought in the U.S., it continues to be an issue for everyone because of a few countries where it is still prevalent as vaccinations are problematic. In the United States, between 1955 and 1957, the incidence of polio in the United States fell by 85-90% and now children are regularly vaccinated. Polio remains endemic in three countries; Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Until the polio virus is eradicated in these countries, all countries remain at risk of the importation of polio. Many baby boomers in this country who survived the initial polio virus are now sufferers of post-polio syndrome, a constant reminder of how vigilant we must be for our future generations. Rotary International and its partners put crews in these countries to go village to village administering the polio vaccine.

Join us in this worthy cause on August 16th at Shoaff Park and help us Stomp out Polio!
