WAYNE BASEBALL: SEASON END

Wayne-baseballHeading into the final 5 games of the regular season Wayne was leading the SAC race. Bishop Dwenger was one game behind in the standings heading into a Saturday double header. In game one, Nick Huyck was on the mound as the game went 9 innings but Dwenger came out on top winning 7-6. Heading into game two the two teams were tied for the SAC crown. Wayne was up 4-2 going into the fifth inning but Dwenger scored nine runs in the final three innings of the game to win 11-6. After losing both games to Dwenger the Generals were still only down one game with two conference games to go. In a non-conference game they beat Jay County 5-1. Huyck was on the mound again against Concordia in a must win game; again they were winning going into the fifth inning but allowed Concordia to score once in each of the final three innings. Concordia won the game 5-4. The same night Dwenger lost to Snider leaving the door open for a share of the title. Wayne led the game 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth; but Concordia scored in the fifth and sixth to win the game 2-1. Again Dwenger lost the same night against Snider.

Wayne ended the regular season with a 14-11 overall record and a 9-5 SAC record. They finished second in the SAC just one game behind Dwenger.

In the last week of the season the good was the pitching as Huyck, Tristan Byall, Kaine Jackson and Eli Mason all pitched very well; the not so good was the offense which got people on base but couldn’t push across enough runs to win; the ugly was the defense which caused 17 errors leading to 11 unearned runs. If you take those runs away Wayne wins their final four games and the SAC. Wayne played Sectionals on 5/31 at Huntington University.

The junior varsity finished the season with a 5-17 record. In the Concordia tournament they got behind early against Dwenger but they put up a fight until the end and in the end they lost 12-6. In the third place game against Concordia the team fell apart and lost 12-0. The team picked themselves up in a back and forth battle against Adams Central. Andre Stribling and Jacob Fisher both knocked in 2 runs in the seventh inning to win 10-9. They then lost 12-6 to Homestead. Against Northfield they ended on the short end of a battle losing 13-12.
