LOCAL GIRL SCOUT CAMP CELEBRATES 65TH BIRTHDAY

Girl-Scouts-ziplineOn Saturday, June 7, 2014, Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana held a grand opening and ribbon cutting dedication of the McMillen High Adventure Course at Camp Agnes S. McMillen to celebrate the 65th birthday of its wonderful camp.

The event was a great success and was attended by nearly 100 Girl Scouts, community leaders, volunteers, donors and parents, who enjoyed geo-caching, ga-ga pits, hikes through camp, and of course zip lining.

The course, two zip lines and a traversing element is designed to challenge participants to go beyond what they ever thought they could do. It promotes the development of support systems, which include learning how to use and take care of personal safety equipment, communicate with a trained adult staff member to properly transfer oneself from one safety system to the next, and finally, to experience first hand the benefits of taking healthy risks; that which can be managed with good plans, strong relationships from the people around you, well cared for equipment (resources) and the willingness to push past preconceived notions of ones abilities.

“Camping and challenges are essential to our mission,” expressed Sharon Pohly, CEO of Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana–Michiana, during the dedication ceremony. “They offer a unique experience unlike any other; the Girl Scout experience. Together in an unfamiliar setting, facing unfamiliar obstacles, girls find the courage within themselves to reach new heights, make new friends, and exceed abilities. As they make choices and direct projects, girls learn to work well with others, become self-reliant, and develop their leadership skills.”

This year the McMillen Day Camp at Camp Agnes S. McMillen will run from June 23-27 from 8am to 4:30pm, where the new High Adventure Course will be in full swing. There are still spots available for those interested in attending. A special thank you goes to the McMillen Foundation, whose generosity made the new High Adventure Course possible.
