WAYNE BASEBALL: IN SEASON

Wayne-Baseball-Nick-HyuckTwo weeks and five games into the 2014 season has been a roller coaster ride. Varsity started the year with a strong outing by Nick Hyuck who only gave up 1 unearned run over 7 innings leading his team to a 4-1 victory at New Haven. The next day in a double header at Heritage the team had a day to forget. In the first game they were blown out 21-0. In game 2 Varsity was up 5-2 through 5 innings but Heritage rallied scoring 2 in the sixth and seventh to get the sweep. Hyuck took the mound once again but this time at home versus SAC top dog Northrop. He was on his game again striking out 11 and allowing 1 run in another complete game performance. Going into the bottom of the sixth Wayne was leading 2-1 the team went on to explode for 7 runs; they won this game 9-1. The next night Northrop returned the favor taking down Wayne 13-3 in 5 innings. So far Varsity is 2-3.

The prime performers for Varsity have been Nick Hyuck is 2-0 with 2 complete games and holds a 0.50 ERA and has only allowed 9 hits and 1 run while striking out 19. Deyonne Hunter is hitting .455 with 4 RBI. Braxton Riley is hitting .385 with 5 RBI. Finally, Kaine Jackson is hitting .333 with 5 walks.

The Junior Varsity roller coaster has yet to come back up because so far it has been all downhill. In the first game of the year against New Haven the score was 2-2 going into the seventh but New Haven scored 4 runs to win 6-2. The next day in a double header against Heritage it was more of the same. In game one Heritage scored 2 in the seventh to win 8-6 and in game 2 Wayne was leading 8-3 going into the seventh but surrendered 12 runs to fall again in the last inning. The next week, they were dominated by Northrop and Snider losing 19-1 and 12-1. So far Junior Varsity is 0-5.

The prime performers for Junior Varsity have been Jose Reina who has a 3.50 ERA striking out 6 through 8 innings. Tay Tay Moore is batting .333 with 7 stolen bases. Finally, Jacob Fisher has played a gold-glove style defense at first base.
