THE RISE OF WAYNE ATHLETICS
When you think of Wayne High School you don’t think of them being an athletic powerhouse but right now you would be wrong. Historically track has been the only competitive sport at Wayne but now they have competition from football, basketball, wrestling and baseball. All the other team sports are also starting to make strides to become regular SAC contenders.
The football team was led by coach Robert Brown and seniors Jari Dada, Zach Ryan, Jaylon Thomas and juniors Kye Black, Keion Powers, Deion Powers, Curtis Stephens and Austin Yarbro. The team finished the regular season 6-3 which was the school’s best record since winning STATE in 1995. They went 5-0 at home and 1-3 on the road but their one win on the road was a 45-6 win @ Dwenger, who lost in the STATE finals. Wayne lost a hard fought game in sectionals to Snider 15-7. Next year the team should be in contention for a SAC title.
The boys basketball team is led by three seniors Wright State recruit Justin Mitchell, Cam LeShore and Levi Mitchell. The team currently sits third in the SAC. Justin Mitchell became the all-time scoring leader in school history passing Roosevelt Barnes.
The wrestling team had success this year with seniors Shaun Johnson (160lbs 39-5) and Kanez Omar (195lbs 43-1) becoming the school’s first STATE qualifiers in 12 years. STATE was held in Indy on 2/21 and 2/22.
The track team will once again be competitive under the leadership of Coach Tommy Hogan. Senior and Purdue recruit Brionna Thomas is looking for a STATE 3-peat in the 100 and 200 meter dash. She would be the first in school history since Sybil Perry in 78/79-80/81 to 3-peat in the 100 meter dash. In cross-country sophomores Jose Reina, Nikki Wilson and junior Alex Cagle made it to Semi-State.
The baseball team has built their program back up. This year they have a lot to look forward to being led by seven seniors Manchester recruit Kaine Jackson, Saint Francis recruit Nick Huyck, Saint Francis football recruit Zach Ryan, Tristan Byall, Jacob Charles, Ron Goodwin, and Matt McCullough. These seniors along with juniors Joey Brown and Braxton Riley have worked hard to get this team to where it is now since their freshman year. The class is primed to make a real push at competing at a high level in the SAC and in sectionals. Coach Eric Sherrill will be able to look back and point to this class as being the reason Wayne baseball should and will be relevant within our region.
Wayne and New Tech Academy @ Wayne along with Wayne’s Athletics have risen and will continue to rise into the future.
