TOASTMASTERS IS FOR LEADERS, TOO

We have talked much about the advantages of belonging to a Toastmasters group, but I thought you might like to hear from some of our members about why they joined. As I have mentioned other times, our members come from all walks of life. Some might wonder why leaders in business would be interested in Toastmasters, so I thought I would interview a couple of business leaders in our group.

Randy is Assistant Vice-President of Retirement Plans at Lincoln Life. He joined to work on his communication skills, which I thought were pretty good when he started. But upon questioning, he admitted that he had not been a consistent speaker and wanted that along with gaining confidence in his speaking abilities.

“I realized how important (good) communication skills are in corporate America and also in managing a department. Toastmasters affords me the opportunity to practice my communication skills within a group where everyone is focused on helping each other become better communicators.”

“Toastmaster clubs provide an environment that allows you to develop your skills and friendships. I would encourage individuals who would like to develop their leadership and communication skills to try Toastmasters.”

Did you notice he mentioned leadership skills too? You see, Toastmasters is not just about communicating, it is also about leadership. You take on different roles of leadership at each meeting and can become officers in a local club leading up to being an officer at the international level.

Let’s hear from another leader. Steve is a Regional Manager at PNC Bank.

“I recognized the reputation that the organization had for speech development and wanted to build my public speaking skills. The seeds were planted years ago when I was working for a hotel and heard about Toastmasters. Then I read about a local Toastmasters group in The Waynedale News and decided to check it out.”

“I have stayed for the camaraderie and support within the group. Our group has developed some deep friendships as we help and encourage each other in communication and leadership. We learn about each other from the different speech topics each week. It is exciting and fun—as well as challenging at times.”

Well, now you know! Toastmasters is not all work, but, it definitely can be a help at work and just in daily relationships–for good communication is at the heart of all relationships.

Check out the Toastmasters group on Tuesdays at 6:30pm at Penguin Point on Lower Huntington Road. You might be richly surprised.
