DIGGING OUT IN WAYNEDALE
Meteorologists issued a winter storm watch for the Waynedale area Tuesday night and into Wednesday. Heavy snow accumulations of 8-15 inches were predicted, with a significant accumulation of ice.
Braising for the supposed blizzard, local stores were jammed with customers. Report was that many of the stores were completely out of milk and bread.
“Stay home,” was the message from Mayor Tom Henry, after the Level 1 Snow Emergency warning was issued for Fort Wayne, Allen County. In addition, the road crews were asking everyone to stay off the roads so they could fight the winter storm.
Snow, ice and blizzard-like conditions shut down the Waynedale area for a portion of the day on Tuesday and all day Wednesday, closing schools, Fort Wayne International Airport, highways and businesses, like General Motors and Fort Wayne Metals.
By noon on Wednesday, February 2, the alerts were downgraded to a Level 2 Snow Emergency, meaning, use caution and only travel if necessary. Level 2 meant for emergencies, going to and from work, and to places like the doctor or pharmacy.
After the storm passed, the Fort Wayne International Airport, reported that just over 8 inches of snow fell, with a grand total of 10.2 inches.
Light snow, approximately an inch, continued throughout Wednesday evening with blowing snow picking up mid-day and evening, reducing visibility on the roads at times. Many of the roads remained impassable due to the snow and sleeting ice from the previous night. In addition, I-69 and 469 were both snow covered, slick and nearly impassable.
Looking on the brighter side, according to a tradition we’re suppose to believe, Punxsutawney Phil, did not see his shadow. Since 1887 that has happened only 15 times. Will we really have an early spring? The groundhog thinks so. I hope so.
