LITTLE RIVER WETLANDS PROJECT ADDS 11 ACRES
Eagle Marsh, Little River Wetlands Project’s wetland preserve on Engle Road in southwest Fort Wayne, has just grown to 716 acres with the group’s acquisition of 11 acres of mature forested wetland at the site. The new property, adjacent to existing woods and bordered on three sides by Eagle Marsh, had long been identified for possible purchase. Once the owner agreed to sell, LRWP moved quickly to arrange a closing earlier this month. Eagle Marsh is the largest preserve in Allen County and one of the largest wetland restorations ever done in Indiana.
“We’re pleased to have completed acquisition of all the land bordering Fox Island County Park at Eagle Marsh,” says Betsy Yankowiak, LRWP’s executive director, “And it’s happening at a great time—just when we’re celebrating our 20th year of restoring and protecting wetlands.” She adds that existing trails will be extended into the new forested wetland by next year.
LRWP’s mission is to facilitate wetlands restoration and preservation in the Little River valley that stretches from Fort Wayne to Huntington. The group currently has 1,111 natural acres under protection, including 716-acre Eagle Marsh, 255 acres at the Arrowhead preserves, and a conservation easement on 140 acres of private land. Wetlands enhance flood control, cleanse groundwater, and provide wildlife habitat as well as, offering opportunities for nature recreation and education.
