COPS UP ON THE ROOF
For the third year in a row, Hoosier law enforcement officers will hit the roofs of area Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants to raise funds for Special Olympics Indiana. From 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, May 7, police officers will serve time on the roofs of 18 Dunkin’ Donuts in Central Indiana and Fort Wayne to raise funds and awareness for the Indiana Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics, a grassroots fundraising and awareness vehicle formed by officers and civilians from all branches of law enforcement.
To thank customers for supporting the Indiana Law Enforcement Torch Run, Dunkin’ Donuts will give a coupon for a free donut to everyone who stops by a “Cop on a Rooftop” store that day and makes a donation. For donations of $10 or more, free medium coffee coupons will be distributed.
“We’re very pleased to have the opportunity to partner with Dunkin’ Donuts for Cop on a Rooftop for the third year,” said Officer Troy Hintz of the Kokomo Police Department and chair of the Indiana Law Enforcement Torch Run program. “The event raised close to $17,000 last year, which goes a long way in funding training programs and games for Hoosier athletes. With even more officers donating their time this year, rain or shine, we’re looking forward to even greater success.”
Once again, Hintz says a number of local radio stations will lend their support with remote broadcasts at certain locations, and this year, Indy 500 princesses will make appearances at select Dunkin’ Donuts locations to help collect donations.
In Indiana, the Law Enforcement Torch Run was organized in 1987. Since then, the Indiana Law Enforcement Torch Run program has continued to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics Indiana through its involvement with various special events and fundraising activities, including Cop on a Rooftop, Showdown of the Shields, Tip-A-Cop fundraisers and other events.
Officers generated more than $425,000 for Hoosier adults and children with intellectual disabilities last year. In addition, the highlight of the Torch Run program’s activity each year is a series of community torch runs, where law enforcement officers carry the “Flame of Hope” through their communities, honoring local Special Olympics athletes as they prepare for the Special Olympics Indiana Summer Games at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.
Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant locations participating in the event include: 5767 St. Joe Rd., 8051 Coldwater Rd., 6747 Jefferson Blvd., and 900 Library Plaza.
