EARTH ENRICHMENT DAY ON EARTH DAY

St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth Catholic School will host its first Earth Enrichment Day on Thursday, April 22, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for its 5th through 8th graders. The event will take place at the St. Joseph Campus, 2211 Brooklyn Ave., Fort Wayne, IN 46802. This special school day is dedicated to the three tenets of environmental stewardship: To be good stewards of our earth; To be responsible stewards of our resources, and to be faithful stewards of our talents.

Earth Enrichment Day will be divided into three parts. The first is a panel discussion of how we can be good stewards of our environment from the domestic, corporate, civic and religious points of view. The panel speakers include Laura Reiss, a St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth school parent; Mark Hellinger of CME Construction, Justin Brugger, a Fort Wayne City administrator; and Jim Tighe, director of the Office of Catechesis for the Fort Wayne-South Bend Catholic Diocese. The panel discussion takes place from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m.

From 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., our students will be divided into groups and travel from classroom to classroom, listening to four environmental speakers of their choosing. We have been fortunate to gather an illustrious group of speakers who will be making presentations to the students.

Our speakers include: Nathan Moore, a LEED architect (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design); Vicky Zehr, Fort Wayne water supervisor; Sayaka Ganz, a professional artist; Soni Fitch, an heirloom chicken farmer; Betsy Magner, former resident of Germany and Canada; Jim Anderson, director of the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo; Glenn Johnson, president of Nature’s Fuel; Patrick Driscoll, a dietician and chef; Jeff Britton, radio host and environmental writer; Carol Cavell and Mary Ibe, director and educator of Trees Indiana; Colin Casey, Navistar manager of hybrid development; Dr. Sutter and Dr. Andes, IPFW anthropology professors.

From 11:50 to 2 p.m., the students will again travel from classroom to classroom and with their teachers, will be participating in hands-on activities that build on what they learned from the morning speakers.

“We are excited to host this first Earth Enrichment day at St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School,” said Lois Widner, Principal. “Our students will have the opportunity to learn about being ‘green.’ Through collaboration and innovative educational methods, our students and staff will gain a better understanding about protecting and preserving our earth’s resources.”
