Bishop Luers High School remembers Clyde Young, OFM

Cyril Anthony Young was born in St. Bernard, Ohio, on November 22, 1926, to John and Ida (Buchheit) Young. He had a thoroughly Franciscan education at St. Clement Elementary and St. Francis Seminary High School. He was admitted to the novitiate at St. Anthony Shrine, Mt. Airy, in 1945 and there he professed his Simple Vows a year later. He received his undergraduate education at Duns Scotus College in Southfield, Michigan, where in 1949; he professed his Solemn Vows in the hands of Provincial Minister Romuald Mollaun. He completed his graduate education at Holy Family Theologate in Oldenburg, Indiana, on June 8th, 1954, where he was ordained by Archbishop Paul Schulte of Indianapolis.

Clyde gave roughly the first 24 years of his ministerial life to education, first at St. Francis Seminary and then, for 17 years at Bishop Luers High School in Fort Wayne. The next 12 years of ministry were given to parochial work in Louisiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Kansas. After a term as guardian for the Motherhouse community, Clyde came to St. Anthony’s, Mt. Airy, 1993 and had remained there ever since.

Clyde was very concerned about poverty. There are legendary stories about his years as Guardian of St. Julian Friary at Bishop Luers High School.

Friars, family, and friends received his body at St. Anthony Shrine Chapel on Monday, September 29th 2008. Interment was in the friars’ plot at St. Mary Cemetery in St. Bernard on Tuesday, September 30, 2008.
