Editors Note: Alyssa Fleming is the daughter of Susan & Dan Fleming and her grandparents live in Waynedale. She has just started a nursing program in Madrid, Spain. Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain. The city is located on the river Manzanares.
Hello friends!
It is September 1st and I just got back to Madrid after going on my orientation trip through Spain’s La Rioja region. La Rioja is a region of Spain that is in the north east section of the country.
I am exhausted! We “trekked”(which we learned was different than hiking since hiking is a one day affair and trekking takes more than one day) through many mountains and it certainly whipped me into shape I had an amazing time and met some amazing people!
I tried to post most of my pictures on photobucket and facebook but both seem to be giving me problems along with my internet so I will have to look into it again once I get caught up on laundry.
I miss everyone dearly but am also super excited for school! First day of classes is September 3rd the day after tomorrow! I am finally getting settled in.
I need to pick up my duffel that the airline lost. Thankfully my apartment is about a 2 minutes walk from the university so it shouldn’t be a big deal picking it up from the school office.
Also! I am discovering the wonderful world of Skype! It’s video messaging…so if you don’t have it and want get it and get a screen name for free just google it.

Hello all!
I have collected a great deal of new emails to add to my list. I was thinking about many of you a lot over the past week or so.
My classes are going pretty well! They are not very difficult yet but I have faith they will speed up. My school has 600 to 650 students, total, which is about 1,000 less than my high school so it is definitely a small school. Also, because I am in the nursing program, my part of the school is extremely small. There are about 10 to 11 people in the nursing program and five of them are first year. Don’t quote me on the statistics, those aren’t exact, but it’s pretty close. And my chemistry class is geared towards nursing and is made for the nursing students therefore, it has a total of five people in it. That’s right 5. I was shocked! I think my largest class is around 20 people, which is smaller than a good portion of my high school classes.
I was talking to my friend who is now attending Colorado University in Boulder who says his smallest lecture is about 92 people, so I know I am getting a rare experience here.
Also, the earliest class I’ve heard of is 9:00am and judging by the way people say “oooo” when I tell them I have a 9:00am class, I’m guessing it’s the earliest. I also get another “oooo” sound when I say that it’s chemistry, but then I explain how I love chemistry and the professor is going abnormally slow. It makes me miss AP Chem where the concept was explained and not drawn out, and concepts like the definition of matter didn’t take ten-twenty minutes. But, I am glad that I get to tutor those kids who are already lost.
