MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Great American Cleanup in May

After a long, cold winter, it’s time to start thinking about the City’s annual spring cleaning: the Great American Cleanup, the nation’s largest community improvement program. This year Fort Wayne’s event will be Saturday, May 17.

A clean city makes such a difference. Not only does it look better to residents and visitors, but also helps the overall quality of life in our city. Litter, graffiti, unkempt parks and trails, and scattered debris are unsightly, but through the work of volunteers, we can come together and show how much we care about our city’s public spaces.

But we can’t do this without your help. I would love to have 3,000 people participate in this fun and rewarding event. It’s a perfect opportunity to gather family, friends, co-workers, members of your neighborhood association, your faith-based organization, school or any other group to help out in a small way that makes a big difference.

The City will provide your group with garbage bags, gloves, T-shirts and flower seeds. And to celebrate your hard work, join us from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 17 for a post-cleanup party at Freimann Square with food, raffle prizes and music.

The Great American Cleanup is the country’s largest beautification and community improvement project. It provides a high-profile platform for activities that meet specific local needs, including litter cleanups, litter prevention education, graffiti removal, beautification and community improvement projects, river cleanups, etc. Almost 3 million volunteers nationwide are expected to participate in the 2008 event.

To register your group for this year’s cleanup, please fill out a registration form and mail or fax it to the City Solid Waste office by Friday, April 11. You can also register online at www.cityoffortwayne.org. Call the Solid Waste Office at 427-1345 for more information. We hope that you will join us in making Fort Wayne a cleaner and safer city this May.

Deadline to register for FEMA disaster assistance March 31.

If you experienced any structural or personal property damage from February’s floods, you have until March 31 to register for Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster assistance.
You can register with FEMA at (800) 621-FEMA or online at www.fema.gov. The telephone hotline is available 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Those using TTY services can call (800) 462-7585.

If you have already applied for FEMA assistance, remember to complete and return the Small Business Administration loan application that comes in the mail. Although you may not be seeking an SBA loan, the application must be returned as part of the disaster assistance process.
