Laptop vs Desktop which is right for you?

There are several things to think about before shopping for your next computer. Generally the first consideration for most buyers is price. You can roughly expect to pay from $300 to $500 more for a comparably equipped laptop. One reason is laptops are physically smaller and the technology needed to get equal amounts of memory, storage and processor speed is going to cost more.

There are laptops with large capacity hard drives, and even two hard drives, however this is not the norm and RAM, which is the memory that the computer thinks with, costs more as well.

One feature that most laptops have that you don’t find on a desktop is the ability to run two monitors. This requires an upgraded video card for your desktop. Most laptops have built in wireless capabilities, which is very handy at home as well as when traveling. And once again the average desktop doesn’t come with this feature.

Don’t purchase a laptop with the idea that in a year or two you can upgrade it to run the latest and greatest software.

This brings us to something else to consider, desktops are upgradeable, you can replace main boards, video cards, sound cards, optical drives, and when you’ve added all these extras you can replace your power supply with a larger one to handle the additional power needed. This isn’t an option with a laptop, plan on using that laptop with its current configuration, until its time to replace it.

Another consideration is the cost of repairs. Most desktop hardware problems can be repaired by a qualified technician, using parts readily available, sometimes while you wait, but usually in a few days, depending on how busy they are. Laptops are a different story, some shops won’t work on them at all, others send them out, taking weeks to return. From keyboards to LCD screens, almost every part of a laptop is proprietary to that model, and usually has to be ordered.

So when shopping, remember, each has its advantage, upgradeable, portable, repairable, affordable, determine your needs, what applications you will be running, and shop accordingly.

And as always if you have any comments or questions, send them to ask@computer-genius.com.
