SCOUTS BRAVE FRIGID KLONDIKE… CARIBBEAN STYLE

Over 200 Boy Scouts, Webelos, and their leaders braved the cold and negative wind chills to compete in the annual Miami Klondike. It was held on Saturday, January 19th at Indian Trails Park, and concluded with an overnight lock-in at the Jorgensen YMCA.

22 patrols from 16 Miami troops competed in various competitions racing from station to station-pushing sleds loaded with gear.

Local Waynedale Troop 344 sponsored by Waynedale United Methodist Church did quite well in the competitions. They entered 2 patrols in the Klondike. A younger group the “Flaming Arrows” placed in two competitions. They placed 2nd in the Limbo contest, and third in First Aid. Representing the Flaming Arrows were James Cody, Bronson Long, Logan Sower, Ben Treesh, Tommy Chavez, Ian Newton, Alex Taylor, and Webelos from Pack 3313, Cory Shadle, Mason Thomas, Vince Watkins, and Mitchell Yoakum.

The older group from Troop 344, the “Wolverines”, captured 2nd place overall by placing second in three events, Cooking, Knots and Lashings, and Coconut Toss, and placed third in the Trolley. The Wolverines garnered enough points throughout the events to win 2nd place overall. Representing the Wolverines were Nathan Seelye, Sean Driscoll, Tyler Davis, Chris Kivi, John Dukarski, Rob Dukarski, Joe Osterman, Chris Shadle, Graham Horner, and Jake Smith.

After the cold competitions outside the scouts moved inside the “Y” to compete in the more Caribbean themed Raft Race, Limbo, Coconut Toss, and had an “Iron Man” competition consisting of swimming 300 meters, riding stationary bikes, and running 2 miles. John Dukarski and Chris Shadle represented Troop 344.

In the Caribbean Cook-off, Troop 344 entered cuisine of Jamaican Pepsi Chicken, Chicki Rice, and Banana Augratin. Judged by WANE-TV celebrity Alyssa Ivanson, the Wolverines claimed 2nd place.

A special thank you goes out to Ken Wells who organized the unique competitions to make this year’s Miami Klondike a huge success.
