WAYNEDALE GIRL WINS STATE COMPETITION

Katherine “Sweet Pea” Pea is a 17-year old, Senior at South Side High School. She is a very busy young girl who has done a lot of hard work and has a lot of passion for everything she is involved in.

Katherine grew up in the Waynedale area and was a former student at Waynedale Elementary where she was involved in the Physical Education program. She ran the “Wonder Mile” which she won in 5th grade. She moved on to Kekionga Middle School where she ran Cross Country and participated in the Montessori Program with Mrs. York. She is on The National Honors Society, The National Spanish Honors Society, The Academic Team, Swim Team and has received The Most Improved Award. She has run Cross Country the past 4 years and received The Most Valuable Player Award, this past year. She went to semi-state and placed in the top 50. Katherine has also been in the Theatre Program at S.S. for four years, and has been in a theatrical program at First Presbyterian Church. The Plays include: David & Lisa, Equus, Merchant of Venice, Midsummer Nights Dream, Jeckle & Hyde, The Musical Carousel, and Our Town. Our Town played at S.S. in April. In February 2006 she was selected from S.S. to go to Washington D.C. for The National Youth Forum C.I.A. for Defense & Intelligence, where she was able to tour the Pentagon.

In the past 4 years Katherine had been on the Speech Team and has been to the state competition two times. She went to the IHSFA State Speech Tournament with 49 other contestants at Southport H.S. in Indianapolis, where she performed a scripted duo skit entitled, “The Plane Truth” with her partner Katherine Walker. They received 1st place along with four other students from S.S. This was all accomplished with the help of their teachers, Elizabeth Franklin Sanchez, Miss Dickerhoof, and Mrs. Dietche. They will be participating with the other S.S. students at The National Catholic Speech Tournament in May at Houston, Texas.

S.S. nominated Katherine for the Sterling Sentinel Award and she competed against 17 others from the local area in April.

Once Katherine graduates, she will be going to Manchester College on a Dean’s Scholarship for Cross Country. She will be majoring in Communications and Theatre.

Katherine’s parents are very proud of her for all of her accomplishments.
