COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

As you may or may not know, after 3 terms on City Council I am not running for re-election this year. I’ve appreciated the opportunity to serve Fort Wayne’s citizens as 4th District City Councilman. I’ve always felt that our founding fathers believed citizens should serve in elected positions for a few terms and then to step down to open the door for other “citizen legislators.” I’m also a believer that our country and our government work the best when as many citizens as possible register to vote and then vote in the primary and general elections. With that thought in mind this is a good time for me to remind you to make sure you’re registered to vote in Fort Wayne’s May 8th primary election. If you’re not sure about your voter registration status you can call the Allen County Election Board at 449-7329 and they’ll be able to answer your questions. Don’t forget, VOTE May 8th!

For a few months there has been growing concern about small commercial signs in the right of way of our roads and streets. Some individuals don’t see this as a major problem but others do. Regardless, these signs are definitely illegal but Fort Wayne’s Right of Way Department is hard pressed to control the large volume of illegal signs and to locate those who break the law by placing these signs. Many of those distributing these illegal signs are from out of town. I’ll look into this situation and try to find out why the law isn’t being fully enforced and what else we can do about it.

As I’ve reported before there have been many instances around the city of break-ins during which the thieves steal copper pipe and other similar materials from homes which are unoccupied for one reason or another. This problem affects rental properties but also homes undergoing remodeling or homes whose owners are on vacation. These thieves have done thousands of dollars of damage to obtain a few hundred dollars of scrap metal for resale. Keep your eyes open for suspicious activity involving vacant properties and call 911 if you think a property might have been entered illegally.

Give me a call with any concerns or suggestions as to how we can make Fort Wayne a better place to live, work, go to school, and play.
