SCOUTING SMOKE SIGNALS

2007 KLONDIKE DERBY

This year’s Boy Scout Klondike Derby/campout was held over the weekend of January 19, 20, & 21 at Hoagland Community Center, Hoagland, Indiana. Among the events were stations for First Aid, Log Sawing, Fire Building, Clove Hitch Challenge, Lashing Challenge, Orienteering, Sled Inspection, Sled Race, Indiana Wild Life Questions, and a Dutch oven cookoff.

I’ve been informed that Troop 38, sponsored by Calvary United Methodist Church, took a 1st Place at the Indiana Wild Life Question station and a 3rd Place in the Clove Hitch Challenge but I’ve had no input on how other troops placed in the other events except for the Dutch Oven Cookoff.

Troop 344 took 1st Place for their ‘VENISON RAVIOLI

Troop 333 took 2nd Place for their TURTLE CAKE (a chocolate cake with marshmallow, caramel, and chocolate topping)

Troop 348 took 3rd Place for their APPLE COBBLE

Mrs. Joan M. Phillips recently replaced Jack Shepard as Scoutmaster for Troop 22 sponsored by the SouthWest Conservation Club, 5703 Bluffton Road here in Waynedale. Joan is married, has a son in the troop, and was once a Girl Scout herself so she comes to the troop with not a little experience about the Scouting program. She and her troop attended the (her first) Klondike Derby and camped over the weekend with acting host Troop 38. Troop 22 meets on Tuesday nights from 7pm to 8:30pm. For more information about Troop 22, contact Mrs. Phillips at 494-8361, email her at j.m.Phillips@hotmail.com, or call Assistant Scoutmaster Gary Grothaus at 639-3479.

Cub Scout Pack 3322, sponsored by Calvary United Methodist Church, 6301 Winchester Road, is planning to have their 2007 Annual Blue and Gold Banquet at 6:30pm on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 in the Fellowship Hall at the church. Anyone wishing to attend or wanting information on joining the Pack or Troop 38 (also sponsored by the church) please contact Ray McCune at 747-6512 or send an email to KampfireKookin@aol.com (subject – Scouting).

BOY SCOUT TROOP OFFERING ‘FREE’ MEMBERSHIP SIGN-UP

Boy Scout Troop 38 is offering ‘free’ membership in the troop to any boy joining the troop before March 31, 2007 – this includes Cub Scouts crossing over from a Cub Pack into Troop 38. Scoutmaster Jerry Lloyd said recently that an anonymous out-of-state benefactor would pay the $11 registration fee each new boy joining the troop. He also stated further that the membership would include a ‘free’ uniform neckerchief at signup. He said, “Every boy joining is invited to look through our uniform closet and pick out uniform parts to help save the family even more money.

If money has been a factor in keeping you or your sons from joining the greatest youth organization in the world, then here’s your chance to join for ‘FREE’. Mr. Lloyd went on to say, “Yes, there is a string attached to this offer; anyone accepting the offer is asked to remain with the troop for one year.” He said that he thinks the offer will be available again in 2008.

SPRING CAMPOREE COMING UP

The 2007 Spring Camporee will be at Huntington Reservoir (Roush Lake) in Huntington, Indiana and will be held near the beach, the same place the 2006 Fall Camporee was held. This year’s theme will be International Cooking with each troop preparing a dish from a different country. Information pertaining to other events to be held will be published as it becomes available.

(NOTE: Mr. Ray McCune, a Boy Scout Troop 38 adult leader and well known Scouting figure in the Waynedale community as well as being a self-proclaimed Dutch oven Chef, was warned ahead of time that Hill Billy cooking or Redneck food would not qualify as ‘dishes from another country’.)

Troop 38 is asking the Waynedale residents to donate used uniforms to help stock their uniform closet. The uniform parts will be distributed free to Scouts who cannot afford to buy them new. Donations (uniforms, camping equipment, or money) to the Boy Scouts of America (Troop, Pack, District, Council, etc.) are tax deductible. To make donations to Troop 38 and Pack 3322, or for information on Scouting in the Waynedale community please contact Ray McCune at 260-747-6512 or email him at: KampfireKookin@aol.com (Subject – Scouting).
