JOIN IN THE FUN AT THE WAYNEDALE PARK

“Mom! Alex hit me!”

“I did not! Jordan doesn’t know how to play the game!”

Sound like a familiar scenario during the summer months?

What can a parent do? Should you: a.) Yell, “Alex stop hitting!” b.) Give everyone a timeout, or c.) Take a walk to the Waynedale Park.

If this sounds all too familiar, of course, “c” is the answer.

Between Xbox 360s and the Cartoon Network many kids would be content to stay indoors all summer. But is this really healthy?

Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Manager Sarah Nichter commented that, “There is a trend toward playing video and computer games but if you get your children out to the park at a young age, they will keep going back.”

The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation’s supervised summer playground program began the middle of June and this year includes our park located at Koons and Elzey Streets in Waynedale.

“You can come and go as you please,” said Sarah. The program includes table games, storytime, kickball, lunch and snack, arts and crafts, and visits from guests like Playtime Theatre and Hearts N’ Parks and will continue until August 5. The city also maintains these activities at five other area parks: Hamilton, Lakeside, Packard, Psi Ote and Lions.

The program is FREE and is open to boys and girls ages 5 and older. Children are invited to come and play Monday through Thursday, 9am to 4pm and on Friday, 9am to 1pm.

And this year, each playground site will be hosting a neighborhood carnival. Come and join in the fun—the carnival for Waynedale is set for Wednesday, July 26 from 5pm to 7pm. Or visit other neighborhood carnivals at their playgrounds:

•Packard Park (Fairfield and Packard) July 12

•Psi Ote Park (Wennonah Lane) July 19

•Lions Park (Carew and Hazelwood) August 2
