Waynedale Political Commentaries

COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

Greetings! I’m currently spending some time on a personal trip out of the good old USA with my wife, Judy. While it’s nice to take a break from the usual daily activities on the home front I can’t help but appreciate more than ever how lucky we all are to live in the greatest country on the planet.

Since I’ve been on City Council I’ve met many fellow citizens who love our country and are actively involved in public service–whether they support their church or Boy/Girl Scouts or their neighborhood association or actively work at the polls or on a political campaign.

Sadly, I’ve also met many who have stopped voting and participating in our democratic institutions because of their frustration with the “system”. They have difficulty looking past their frustration with garbage collection or speeding cars on their street or a pothole or the sale/lease of the Toll Road or our foreign policy or taxes or the size of their Social Security check or various other matters with which they take issue.

When I hear concerns and complaints of this type my automatic reply is to encourage EVERYONE to be actively involved in community service and in local, state, and federal government by at least voting and hopefully by doing even more.

At this time–just before our great 4th of July holiday–I’m reminded that all of those brave Americans including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John and Abigail Adams, and many others, just intelligent men and women with the tenacity and skill to craft an amazing document–our Constitution. They and the farmers and craftsmen who took on the British were brave patriots who risked their lives–if we had lost the revolutionary war they would all have been executed by the dictators who ruled the British Empire. What they did, changed not only the course of history for the American Continent but the entire world. Take a look at the constitutions of many countries all over the world and you’ll agree that’s a fact.

To all of you who actively support our great nation by voting and participating in many other ways–Thanks!–you are the modern patriots!  To those who are frustrated that government takes actions with which you don’t always agree–don’t drop out!  Register, vote, and ask any candidate of any party how you can help out. Better yet, run for City Council or School Board or join your neighborhood association’s leadership and make a difference.

Remember–the Constitution is an amazing document for which many have toiled and spilled their blood. Never take the Constitution for granted–it will live on as the foundation for the free nation in which our kids and grandkids will go to school and work and play only if we all stay involved as our founding fathers expected. There are no guarantees–it’s up to us make this an even better nation for generations to come.
