SPRING SEASON STARTS NOW

According to the calendar spring started some time back but when you are dealing with annuals and garden vegetable plants, spring starts when all danger of frost is behind us. Unfortunately, no one knows exactly when that date arrives. Some say after Mother’s Day, some say not until Memorial Day. Your guess is as good as mine. However, April 24th is the day we picked to start and I am here to tell you, that is too early. I have noticed over the years that the “big box stores”, or the “chain” stores usually start on April 1st. Ouch! I have seen freezing weather and snow hit on the day after they put bedding plants out for sale. I saw snow fall on April 28th last year and it was cold.

It is, of course perfectly safe to plant perennials, shrubs, trees and roses at this time. In fact, the sooner the better as these plants love cool to cold weather. And if you have any perennials that need to be transplanted, do it now. While it is cool these transplants will not go through any stress. Final pruning of your roses is recommended at this time. Even your flowering trees could be lightly pruned even though they are in bloom now.

One thing is for sure every year. If you do decide to, be very cautious and wait until late May, you will be disappointed as the selection will become limited by Memorial Day. Just remember a few simple “selling rules”. If the weather is nice and warm, things will be selling fast. Also know that Mother’s Day is the real key date and that is when the majority of plants are sold. Watch the weather reports and pay more attention to what the low temperatures are going to be, not the highs. Frost can happen on a clear night as warm as 36 or 37 and if the weather guys and gals are off by just one or two degrees, well, then you’ve got trouble.
