COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

Greetings! Steady progress is being made at Southtown Centre. Menard’s will open in a few weeks and the Walmart plans are moving forward as well. The Firestone auto business is being refurbished. The Regional Public Safety Training Center—which will provide training for police, fire, EMS, and probably some military personnel as well—has been OKed by City Council. Other businesses have also expressed interest in the Southtown site. Congratulations to Mayor Richard on his perseverance in supporting the rebirth of Southtown despite many opponents—often behind the scenes. The next step involves you—please shop at the businesses at Southtown—and encourage young people in the region to consider a public safety career.

I recently had the opportunity to tour the Regional VA Hospital here in Fort Wayne. Despite funding cutbacks that are unfair to our honored veterans the staff members at the VA are doing their best to provide quality care for these fine men and women. Now is a great time to write Congressman Souder or Congressman Pence (who represents many individuals in southern Allen Co.) and ask them to fight harder to save our VA Hospital from being shut down as the VA is planning to do during the next couple of years!

Good news: Mr. Shaver, the developer who owns land near Time Corners where all the trees were cut down, has agreed to take some steps to improve the appearance of the area. He has put the property up for sale and doesn’t HAVE TO do landscaping, fencing, etc. at this time but he recently told me he plans to do so regardless. I appreciate his willingness to complete some temporary improvements between now and the time the next property owner completes full development of that site. This is a matter important to all Fort Wayne citizens since West Jefferson is a major entry point into our city.

Neighborhood leaders have until April 1st to turn in their CEDIT neighborhood project request forms to the Board of Works. This is a good time to talk with your neighborhood leaders and request street and sidewalk repairs in your neighborhood through this process. Every requested capital improvement will be analyzed by the city engineers and considered for funding.

Give me a call with any concerns or suggestions regarding our community. Enjoy the warmer weather!
