There’s no dress code or valet parking. They just like to keep it this way, friendly and neighborly at a local restaurant/bar in Waynedale, called the Waynewood Inn.

At this humble spot along Airport Expressway and Bluffton Roads, clientele includes everyone from CEOs to truck drivers. It is convenient for both travelers and local business people. And has been that way for 35 years.

Originally, the Waynewood Inn restaurant was owned independently by Walt Growley. Walt then partnered with Bob Shopper. A few years later, Bill Brademeyer joined, as well as Dick Teusch, who worked as bartender for many years. As time progressed Bill passed away, Walt had a stroke and Bob retired. Opening at 4 a.m., with the help of his dad Charles, mother Grace-who served as cook-and wife Linda, Dick Teusch became the sole proprietor.

Recently Chris Saine has joined Ed Scherschel as co-owner of Waynewood Inn.

Chris, who lives on Beatty Avenue, is a Wayne High School graduate who simply enjoys the restaurant business. He began as a cook for Waynewood 4 years ago.

Ed learned about the restaurant operations 36 years ago when he started out at the Pancake House/KFC in New Haven and was a KFC manager for 28 of those years.

“Our customers are important in our restaurant. A lot of them are like family,” co-owner Ed Scherschel says. “In fact, Linda Teusch still stops in and visits with us frequently. We are all still family and we want to keep it that way.”

Waynewood serves simple but very tasty homemade food. Almost everything from the soups to desserts is prepared fresh daily. They serve breakfast specials, which include eggs, hashbrowns, your choice of meat, toast, and coffee at $4.25, as well as, a “prime rib dinner after 4” for $8.95.

The atmosphere is casual. Waynewood opens at 5:30 a.m. and serves until 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday—5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. They are closed on Sundays.

“Being a neighborhood restaurant/bar they still do those little things…prepare their own food and have everything as fresh as possible.”
