ST. THERESE STUDENT WINS YOUTH ESSAY CONTEST
“Memorable Cookouts from Hoosier Farms”
U. S. Senator Dick Lugar recently announced the county winners for the 2005-2006 Dick Lugar Youth Essay Contest.
Eighth grade students throughout Indiana wrote essays focusing on this year’s theme, “Memorable Cookouts from Hoosier Farms.” Students were asked to reflect on cookouts they have shared with their families and then describe the items on the menu that made them spectacular. The participants were instructed to consider the nutritional value contained in their favorite dishes and to address the diversity and versatility of Hoosier agricultural products.
Ivy Strubel, St. Therese Catholic School and Jeff Teeters from St. Joseph Hessen Cassel Catholic School were the winners from Allen County.
Ivy is the daughter of Ed and Barb Strubel and lives on Winchester Road. Her essay spoke of her grandparents as farmers and the great times they had during family reunion campouts.
A farmer and former small businessman, Lugar created the Dick Lugar/Indiana Farm Bureau/Farm Bureau Insurance Companies Agricultural Essay Contest as a way to teach hoosier youth about the state’s agricultural heritage.
County winners Ivy and Jeff competed at the district level. Jeff was chosen as a District 2 winner. District winners were then invited to attend the Indiana Farm Bureau State Convention on December 9, in Indianapolis, where they were recognized for their achievements.
