COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

As has always been the case, the one constant in our lives is CHANGE! One more significant change for all citizens of Fort Wayne is in the near future…on January 1, 2006 the citizens of the Aboite area will become citizens of Fort Wayne. There has been a continuing effort during the last several years to make sure that new Fort Wayne residents living in Aboite and other annexed areas are provided city services without detracting from doing a good job for current residents. As of January 1st I will become Councilman for all of the citizens of the Aboite annexation in addition to my responsibilities to the people of the current 4th district. I’m determined to make sure that the job gets done right. I’m committed to giving whatever additional time and effort are necessary to make sure that all of the citizens of the 4th District are well represented—whether they live in Lake Shores, Indian Village, Belle Vista, Bloomingdale, Wildwood Park, North Highlands, West Central, or an Aboite neighborhood!

Neighborhood leaders should be aware that after January 1 several neighborhood associations in the Aboite area will be participating in meetings of the Southwest Neighborhood Partnership. Please welcome these new residents! The neighborhood partnerships may be reorganized in the future. Neighborhood leaders themselves will participate in any reorganization of the partnership structure in the future.

I was happy to hear that previous 4th District City Councilman and current State Senator David Long is sympathetic to allowing cities and counties throughout the state to have more input into local government structure. A lot of time, sweat, and dollars are being wasted in communities such as ours saddled with our 1800s governmental system with overlapping city and county governments. I’m convinced that as a bare minimum the citizens of Fort Wayne and Allen County should be allowed by the State of Indiana to determine how our local government will be structured!

An early voting reminder, especially for those who don’t have driver’s licenses: don’t forget that you can vote in Indiana only if you have an official photo ID. You can get an Indiana ID card at your local license bureau. The best time to do this is well before next year’s primary election in May, 2006!

My apologies for all of the “serious” matters in this week’s column but there were some items I needed to discuss with you.

Have a great holiday season with your friends and family!

Give me a call with any suggestions or thoughts you may have!
