THAT’S THE WAY I SAW IT

SWEEPS NOT UNUSAL

With the Chicago White Sox sweeping the World Series against Houston, baseball fans may ask the question: “Are sweeps in the World Series that unusual?”

A quick look at the Baseball Encyclopedia tells us that there have been 18 World Series sweeps:

The New York Yankees have had the most; 1927, 1928, 1932, 1938, 1929, 1950, 1998 and 1999.

Now what team has been swept the most? I would never have guessed it. The New York Yankees; 1922, 1963 and 1976. However, if you lump together the Philadelphia A’s and the Oakland A’s, they have also had three: Philadelphia 1914, and 1950, and Oakland 1990.

Have any of them been upsets? The worst was the 1954 Cleveland Indiana vs. the New York Giants. No one in their right mind would have picked that one. Cleveland had won 111 games that year. That was the year that Willie Mays stole the spotlight for the Giants. The Giants won; 5-2, 3-1, 6-2, & 7-4.

The 1990 Cincinnati vs. Oakland series was the most stunning World Series sweep since 1954. The Oakland A’s were returning to the World Series for the third straight year and were obviously the best team on paper. Cincinnati won 7-0, 5-4, 8-3 & 2-1.

The 1914 Boston Braves win over Philadelphia was a tremendous upset. The miracle Braves were in last place, 15 games behind the first place New York Giants in early July. They won 52 of their last 66 games to take the Pennant: 7-1, 1-0, 5-4, & 3-1.

What baseball writer will predict the next World Series sweep? Remember there have only been 18.
