Waynedale Political Commentaries

COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

As I write this column, Florida has been hit once again by a hurricane. Hopefully local authorities in Florida and Indiana and our entire nation are gradually learning better methods of helping those hit by disasters wherever they may live. As I’ve written before, it’s up to local government to respond effectively to disasters such as major storms, floods, accidents, and other events. Floridians and Hoosiers can ask for federal help from agencies such as FEMA, but it’s up to city and county government to be the first line of defense. Fort Wayne’s Homeland Security Director, Bernie Beier, is well aware of the importance of disaster preparedness and is working to coordinate the efforts of all of our public safety divisions such as police, firefighters, and EMS.

At the request of some citizens in the Waynedale area I’ve talked with Library Director Jeff Krull regarding the possibility of extending the hours of the Waynedale Library. Unfortunately, I haven’t made much progress to date. Budgetary restrictions apparently don’t leave the library with much flexibility. Perhaps library hours could be changed somewhat even if the budget won’t allow more hours of service. If residents of the area are have ideas regarding a more “user-friendly” schedule let me know and I’ll continue to work with ACPL leadership.

Recently I met with city planning officials and representatives of the Elmhurst Association regarding the future of the asphalt crushing plant and the “Tiffany Heights” project along Ardmore. Those projects are both being actively monitored to make sure that city guidelines are followed. I’m still not satisfied that the plans for the access lanes for the Tiffany Heights project and will continue to work on that problem. Call me any time with input regarding this issue.

I’ve recently heard once again that Scott’s Grocery is planning to expand. That’s good news and I’m convinced that there’ll be lots of business for Scott’s when their Waynedale store is updated.

The skateboard park just south of Lawton Park has been a great success. Unfortunately there has been some criminal activity including threats to skateboarders and thefts at the skateboard site. Police Chief Rusty York and police officers are well aware of the problem and are taking appropriate measures. I’ve suggested that videocams be installed—there’s no question that criminals moderate their activity when they’re aware they’re being watched. Hopefully all of the kids who enjoy skateboarding will continue to use the facility!

Call me with any thoughts or suggestions!
