THE VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP

A Township for All Seasons…A Summer of Service

With Community Service projects benefiting the citizens of this great area all throughout the year, the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office has truly become a township for all seasons. During the fall, the Veteran’s Standown and Healthy Cities Health Fair provide health screenings, food, and clothing to local residents. During the winter months, the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office “coat give-away” provides an alternative for those clients who do not have the appropriate seasonal attire to battle with Jack Frost and Old Man Winter. With the emergence of the beautiful and fragrant spring flowers, northern Indiana’s largest Easter Egg hunt blooms under the Wayne Township Banner. During this joyous event, those participating take pleasure in observing between 500 and 700 eager egg hunters scurrying about Headwaters Park finding the treats left behind by the Easter Bunny.

In previous years, the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office traditionally engaged in a single community service project for the summer. But as the dedicated and community oriented staff has developed into Township Governments finest, we have partnered with churches other social service agencies and townships to provide the citizens of this community with innovative programs and events. This year, we have added several other summer projects and services.

For the elderly that have no other means, the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office provides lawn mowing assistance in order to keep code violations down and the neighborhood appearance up. It is so heartwarming to see a senior look out with pride at their lawn. As Trustee, I believe it is our obligation to recognize and meet the needs of our elderly citizens.

Our Crimes Against Seniors Program was a huge success. Seniors were presented with information from the Better Business Bureau and the Allen County Sheriff’s Department regarding financial crimes against seniors. This informative presentation centered on identity theft and how to recognize telephone, magazine, door-to-door schemes and home improvement scams. Seniors were also presented with elderly law information regarding living wills, estate planning and changes in state Medicare laws. I would like to personally thank Pastor Dave Adams and Betty Reckeweg from Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. Special appreciation is also extended to Marjorie Stephens from the Better Business Bureau, Detective Harold West from the Allen County Sheriff’s Department and Charles Backs from Beers, Mallers, Backs and Salin. These individuals contributed their time and talent to make this occasion a success.

Our sixth annual Computer Explorer’s Camp also went under way in the month of June. Twenty-two children showed up the first day eager and ready to learn about computers, the City of Fort Wayne and the world in which they live. The camp stresses computer literacy skills and reinforces science, math, reading and history. Weekly field trips coincided with scheduled topics and parents were kept abreast by newsletters detailing the weekly class activities and learning goals.

Our Computer Explorer’s Camp opening celebration started with our annual fishing derby. Special thanks to Reverend Al Wingfield and his staff for accommodating us again this year at Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary. We had over 60 participants in our annual family team competition. Thanks to the Fort Wayne Fishing Club and Tony Truelove of Lafayette Bait and Tackle for all your support and donated equipment. This event consists of volunteer members of my staff and teams of adults and children competing to catch the largest fish. The idea is to promote family interaction in a natural setting thus forming bonds and creating memories that hopefully will last a lifetime.

All of the recreational activities were paid for with grants received from local philanthropic organizations and volunteer time from the Wayne Township staff. I wish to extend my most sincere gratitude and appreciation for your valuable gift(s).

The entire staff of the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office values its role as a community partner and believes that the programs we provide make our community a better place to live. If you have any suggestions for a needed community service project or you are aware of any unmet needs, please contact Wilford Allen or Jason Hile at (260) 449-7000. We welcome the opportunity to see if there are other ways we can further serve the Wayne Township Area.

Enjoy the summer season!
