THAT’S THE WAY I SAW IT

Fairbanks Alaska’s Midnight Sun Game Going Strong

Every year in June, Fairbanks has its annual Midnight Sun Game. In fact, June 21, 2005 they held their 100th game. The game starts at 11:00 PM and ends about two and one-half hours later. The game is played with no lights. The game is stopped at midnight with the singing of the Alaskan Flag Song and then completed.

The Fairbanks Gold Panners season is about six weeks and many college players are in this league. One year a team from Japan didn’t understand the lights would not be turned on and pulled their team off the field.

On June 21, 1992 I made it a point to be in Fairbanks to take in this game. It was a very good game with Fairbanks beating Anchorage 2 to 1. My ticket for this game was a gold coin. This is a terrific promotion and many baseball fans don’t realize the game is played.
