PERRY’S POEMS
FAMILY REUNION
Comes a time each year, as sure as sin,
When the corn’s laid by and wheat’s in the bin.
Ain’t it the most natural thing in the land
When you have a little spare time on your hands,
To want to get out the old family bus,
Fill her up with vittels till the springs ‘most bust.
Then journey to the spot where your folks will be,
knowing they’re feeling the same as me.
Getting up and starting in the early morn,
Looking and comparing the beans and the corn.
You might make it to the grove about half past eight.
Most everybody’s there, must be a bit late.
Greeting old friends, a little more grey,
Kids growing up so happy and gay.
Have a bunch of new folks you never seen before.
Cute little shavers, always wish there were more.
After visiting and playing they get the table set.
Seems like a week since the last time you et.
Great mounds of food that make the table sway.
There’s a hole in your innerds that could hold a bale of hay.
You reach out sort of sneakin’ to swipe a little taste,
Somebody hisses, “Wait till Uncle Bill says grace.”
Why wait on him, the old lazy lummox,
There’s nothing he can say going to turn my stomach.
Then you make a dive at the taters and meat
Heaping up your plate with good things to eat.
You eat and you stuff till you gasp for your breath.
Can’t wiggle your pie till you back up and rest.
Man, ain’t it swell when your belly’s nice and tight
And you’d have to use a ramrod to get down another bite?
Kinfolks all around you, everybody feeling grand,
Makes you feel mighty proud to live in such a land.
Yessir, Lord, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart
That in Your mamouth scheme of life, we become a tiny part.
We will try to be more grateful for the boundless gifts You give,
And do our best to make this world still a better place to live.
