SCOUTING SMOKE SIGNALS

Scouts Fly High On Wings of Eagles

The last issue of The Waynedale News covered the Spring Camporee for Miami District held at Camp Timberlake. The issue before that covered the basics that it takes to attain the rank of Eagle in our organization. It is not an easy task to earn the Eagle Rank and this issue will start a short profile on the Scouts from our area that have gone all of the way to the top. My records extend to last May, so that is a good place to start.

Michael LeMaster constructed an all weather collection bin for The Franciscan Center so that they might receive donations out of the weather and 24-hours a day. Michael had 72 hours of service on his project and he accomplished a worthy job.

Derek Krebs repaired erosion problems at the West Hamilton Place Association’s pond. The area has much more pleasing eye appeal now and will also keep the pond from filling up to puddle size with silt run-off from the surrounding area. Derek and his crew logged more than 100 hours in the process of doing that project properly.

Josh Hinty almost rebuilt the library at the Boys and Girls Club after the previous one had been almost totaled by our last flood. Josh gathered a great crew from fellow Scouts and friends and they were able to clean and paint the library. Josh then installed brand new bookshelves. Josh felt that the brand-new shelves looked rather bare without a book on them, so with plenty of scout spirit and good help a book drive was held to fill those shelves.

Ryan Warthen and his crew built and hung bat houses for the Southwest Allen County Community Schools Environmental Center. Ryan estimated about 37 hours of service in his project. We all hope that the natural insect control helps out this coming summer.

Preston Collins and other Scouts got together to build new picnic tables to replace the floaters at Calvary United Methodist Church. It took a lot of design and work to put this one together. 86 hours of volunteer labor were required.

We need to recognize, honor, and thank all of the Scouts and community for the help that they have given and that they continue to give.

More Eagle Profiles will appear during future columns. So keep your eyes open and you may just spot another Eagle Project either in the works or already completed. My hope is that you will consider that it might just be the Boy Scouts that are the responsible group in some way or shape.
