Waynedale Political Commentaries

DEAR WAYNEDALE READERS,

It is an exciting time to be in Fort Wayne. We are working hard to build a better a city and retain and gain jobs. I want to share with you some activities that have benefited residents of Fort Wayne.

The City recently hosted a Greenway Summit, which was a public meeting to discuss the importance of connectivity for trails and greenways in the community. At the Summit, I announced an $8 million, four-year plan to improve and add trails and greenways in the community. The City will commit $2 million over four years. The City will leverage its support with matching dollars through other funding sources that will total $8 million. Possible funding sources include state and federal grants, foundations and private contributions. Proposed projects include capital improvements and the maintenance of existing and future pathways will be a priority.

Our financial commitment demonstrates our support to improve the quality of life for our residents. The greenway promotes biking, walking and running as exercise opportunities to improve health and fitness. The greenway system also links parks, schools and neighborhoods. We want to continue to work together to make our greenway and trail system even better.

We have also begun acquiring more than a dozen homes damaged in the 2003 flood. A few weeks ago, we received a check for more than $650,000 from the State of Indiana through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. We have been working for more than a year with the state and federal governments to get to this point. We have encountered several obstacles through this process, but we are pleased to be able to help the flood victims. The homes acquired by the City will be demolished and become open green spaces. We are continuing to work to find more grants to purchase additional homes in the future.
