HOME MAKEOVER ON OLD TRAIL ROAD

K & K Insurance, 1712 Magnavox Way, Fort Wayne has participated in the Day of Caring for the last three years. Day of Caring is an opportunity to support the community through service. United Way of Allen County works with area agencies like K & K and other groups to provide a variety of volunteer opportunities including painting a senior’s home, lawn work for a person with disabilities, food or personal care item collections, ice cream socials and reading to children.

Once a company determines what type of project they are looking for, they attend the project selection in the United Way of Allen County building downtown. The United Way has all the projects lined up depending upon the number of people they will need to complete the project in one day.

K & K and the Aon Service Center allowed employees to take a day with pay on August 25 to work on the project they selected. They also provided them with plenty of water, pop and ice. Both companies allowed them to hold fundraisers within their company that was supported by the employees and then used the money to buy supplies and the Day of Caring T-shirts for each volunteer.

Helyn Young on Old Trail Road in Waynedale was the recipient of this year’s project for K & K Insurance. They chose to assist Helyn on landscaping and some outside home improvements. “After we picked out our project, we went to visit Helyn and the project site. We spoke to her on exactly what she wanted done and we also made suggestions on what else we could do to assist her,” said Deb Schmidt, Operations Manager at K & K.

On Wednesday, August 25, 2004 the Day of Caring volunteer Crew Chiefs and Teams started their workday with a Breakfast Kickoff at McCulloch Park, next to GE on Broadway. They then proceeded to Helyn Young’s house as well as other projects throughout Allen County!

Helyn Young first moved to Waynedale in 1932. She is a 1937 graduate of Elmhurst High School and has lived at this particular residence since she and her husband built it in 1941. Helyn has two daughters, Marjorie and Rosalie, and two grandchildren.

This year along with the fundraising efforts, Arby’s of Waynedale provided lunch for each team member and also for Helyn. Sandpoint Greenhouse donated approximately $400 worth of flowers and shrubs to replace and replenish Helyn’s yard and K & K’s contracted landscaping company, Gary Lallow Landscape, to donate mulch and dirt.

As you can tell, K & K Insurance, a leading provider of sports, leisure and entertainment insurance, certainly makes it a community effort to help their neighbor. A record of 1,984 people joined forces in 2004 on more than 103 projects. “We normally chose to participate by assisting at a private site recommended by Turnstone or the Council on Aging.” This was the 12th year for United Way of Allen County Day of Caring.
