WAYNEDALE AREA GYMNASTS EXCEL
South Side’s Amber Shaw is an extraordinary young lady. She has qualified to advance to the gymnastic regional, after placing first in the uneven bars at sectional. She also advances in the all-around competition, which is a dream for Amber.
Amber has had to have both of her elbows operated on, due to the demands that participating in gymnastics has made on her. Despite the pain from the rehabilitation, she has persevered. She placed third at last years state meet in the uneven bars with a score of 9.575.
She trains both during the school year and the summer break at the Summit Academy of Gymnastics, a facility that has helped many gymnastic champions. In order to improve her endurance and conditioning, she worked out with the summer weight training program at South Side High School.
She also has been a cheerleader, a diver on South Side’s Swim Team, a member of the Track Team and maintains an A average in her college prep classes.
Elmhurst High School senior Angie Staker excels in athletics as well as academics. She is a three-year member of the varsity cross-country team and has been on the varsity track team for four years. Her favorite sport is gymnastics and she has been on the varsity team for four years. Angie made the All SAC Gymnastics team for Fort Wayne, three out of four years and received Most Valuable Player for two years in both gymnastics and cross-country. In addition to her athletic abilities, Angie is a member of the National Honors Society and a volunteer at Lutheran Hospital. She plans to attend Purdue University to study nursing.
