MAYOR GRAHAM RICHARD
Indiana has been consistently ranked among the leaders in the nation in obesity and obesity-related health issues. While our city has made great strides in becoming a healthier community, our health, fitness and eating habits are still a major concern for every segment of our community. That is why I am pleased to announce that the City of Fort Wayne has partnered again with the Heart Center Medical Group and many other sponsors to bring the Living Healthier Series to the citizens of Fort Wayne.
This is the fourth year for the lecture series that historically has focused on health-related topics. Given local and national media’s focus on nutrition and diet, the Living Healthier Series sponsors have devoted the entire series of lectures to spotlight nutrition. Local experts will give a lecture followed by ample opportunity for questions and answers. The topics and speakers will be:
April 28, 2004 Optimal Nutrition – What is it? Dr. Peter Hanley
May 26, 2004 Focus on Fats Dr. Peter Hanley
June 23, 2004 Focus on Carbohydrates and Proteins Dr. Stacie Wenk
July 28, 2004 Obesity and Dieting: Sense and Nonsense Dr. Stacie Wenk
August 25, 2004 Recipe Modification/Meal Planning Barb Minger, RD, MS and Amber Kaehr, RD
September 22, 2004 Nutritional Supplements Dr. Peter Hanley
October 27, 2004 Panel Discussion: Dr. Peter Hanley, Dr. Stacie Wenk, Barb Minger, RD, MS and Amber Kaehr, RD
The seven-month series will take place on the last Wednesday of each month, April to October 2004, at 6:30pm at the Kachmann Auditorium in Building 2 at Lutheran Hospital, 7950 West Jefferson Blvd. Parking is free.
The Living Healthier Series is free and open to the public. Healthy refreshments will be provided as will take-home information from each lecture. Prior to some of the lectures, free health screenings will be offered. A donation of a non-perishable food item is encouraged and all collected goods will go the Community Harvest Food Bank.
The Living Healthier Series is sponsored by the City of Fort Wayne, the Heart Center Medical Group, the South West Area Partnership, the Indiana University School of Medicine, Lutheran Health Network, News Channel 15, NetPoint Design, Access Fort Wayne, and Northeast Indiana Public Radio.
