SCOUTING SMOKE SIGNALS

BOY SCOUT TROOP 38 ACTIVITIES

By the way, Troop 38 has moved back into Calvary United Methodist Church for their Monday night, 7pm meetings. Troop 38 has been meeting at SouthWest Conservation Club since last spring when the church flooded. Thank you SouthWest Conservation Club, we really appreciated your hospitality.

THIS I BELIEVE . . .

Dear Scouters and Parents,

You’ve probably heard the story about the man walking along the beach after a storm, tossing starfish back into the sea. A passerby asked why he bothered, since he couldn’t possibly save them all. “I can help this one, though,” he said as he tossed another back to safety.

Scouting began in the United States in 1910. Since then, almost 100 million youth have benefited from the character-building experiences they’ve had as Scouts. We didn’t touch all those lives at once. It took several million adult volunteers almost a hundred years to work with those 100 million kids. Right now in our council, on any given weeknight, thousands of kids who really need it, are having a great time at a Scout activity, and building skills, confidence, and character in the process.

As a Scout executive, I know my opportunity to touch the life of any one Scout is very limited. And when I consider our opportunities to influence one boy, I realize we have a relatively short time to do Scouting’s work in his life. The beachcomber’s work was most important to the starfish he was able to touch. That’s why I’m so grateful for your dedicated gifts of time and talent. Thanks for being there for your boys.

Sincerely, Chris Mathes, Scout Executive, BSA – AWAC

A CODE TO LIVE BY . . . A SCOUT IS KIND

by Jim Molebash, Field Director

I was always told, “You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.” (I never asked why in the world you would want to catch flies!) Kindness, as a practical matter, does make one easier and more pleasant to be around. Being mean and unkind can do nothing but drive others away.

The Scout Handbook says, “We live in a world that has more than its share of anger, fear, and conflict. Extending kindness to those around you and having compassion for all people is a powerful antidote to the poisons of hatred and vioence.”

The Scout Handbook says, “kindness is a sigh of true strength . . . to be kind you must look beyond yourself and try to understand the needs of others.” (Sort of walk a mile in my moccasins.)

William Penn wrote, “I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore that I can do, or any kindness I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
