Waynedale Political Commentaries

COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

Hello readers! Thanks for your support in the November 4th city election! Happily, since November 4th the level of political discourse has settled down a bit. The local, state, and national campaign scene in 2004 will likely be fairly contentious; this remains to be seen. During the 2003 city elections I was very happy to note two very positive trends among voters. First, voters seemed to be very discerning in casting their ballots. They sized up the candidates and selectively voted for those they thought were the most qualified regardless of party. Fort Wayne’s voters also stated their opinion regarding what they feel are or are not appropriate campaign tactics. They used their ballots to make it clear that they don’t tolerate negative attack ads and they supported candidates who want to move our community forward. My hope is that the same attitudes will prevail locally and even nationally among voters in the 2004 elections.

As you are probably aware, new directional traffic signals are currently being installed at the Bluffton Road – Lower Huntington Road intersection. These traffic-engineering improvements should enhance traffic flow through the Waynedale area and give a boost to economic activity in Waynedale as well as the south side of the city in general. New traffic signals won’t directly create new businesses or new jobs but they definitely demonstrate that Fort Wayne city government supports continued progress in the “Waynedale News” area. Thanks again to Ms. Beulah Stoker of the SE Waynedale Association and others for all of their hard work on this project!

The city leaf pickup is in full swing and hopefully will be completed before the first heavy snowfall hits Fort Wayne. If you are by any chance missed during the leaf pickup (a very unusual event) call the Fort Wayne Street Department at 427-1235 or give me a call or send me an email (see below). When the snow hits please remember that crews will clear the major traffic arterials first and then plow residential streets soon afterward.

Have a great Thanksgiving holiday season with your family and friends! Don’t forget about two important events on Wednesday, November 26th: The annual tree lighting ceremony will take place downtown that night and the grand opening of the new ice rink is also scheduled on the east side of Headwaters’ Park for 5:30pm on that same evening. Give me a call with any concerns or suggestions!
