VISIT THE MIDWEST’S OLDEST AMERICAN INDIAN STRUCTURE
Near the corner of Old Trail and Bluffton Road, next to the Fort Wayne Conservation Club, stands the oldest American Indian structure in the Midwest.
The Chief Jean Baptist Richardville House has been getting a face lift. The Indian House, as it is known by most people in Waynedale, has been newly renovated and will be open to the public on Saturday, November 1st, from 9am – 6pm.
The home of Miami Civil Chief Jean Baptist Richardville, one of the wealthiest men in Fort Wayne in the early 1800’s, is being preserved under the meticulous care of the Allen County Fort Wayne Historical Society.
The Richardville House is listed as one of “America’s Most Treasured Places”.
Chief Richardville was the son of a French fur trader and Miami Indian Ta-cum-wah, sister of Chief Little Turtle. With the help of his mother, Richardville built a profitable trading empire in Fort Wayne, controlling the portage between area waterways.
The public is welcome. No admission will be charged. Visitors may sample Indian pudding, fry bread and venison stew. Baked goods will also be available. Come tour the historical home of Chief Richardville and visit with his descendents. This will be the final opportunity this year to visit the Chief’s home.
