Waynedale Political Commentaries

COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

Plans are moving forward for installation of the new directional traffic signals at the Lower Huntington Road-Bluffton Road intersection! Hopefully that much needed signal upgrade will be completed as soon as City Council just passed a “prior approval” measure to move up the time of installation. With several new businesses—including 4 new expanding financial institutions—in Waynedale traffic will likely increase and the new signalization should be a major benefit!

During the last few months I’ve organized several meetings with residents of the 4th District who were affected by the massive floods that hit Fort Wayne this summer. All of the information presented by citizens has been recorded by city storm water specialists and is being analyzed with the major goal being to prevent future flooding. The next step will be for the Army Corps of Engineers to complete its review and then local planners will work with the Corps to design a plan for the future. I believe that floods like those of July 2003 can hit almost any part of our city and it’s time for a comprehensive plan to prevent flooding everywhere in Fort Wayne.

Recently the city election campaign has become somewhat “negative” which is an unfortunate development. It’s always fine as far as I’m concerned for one candidate to criticize the policies or record of another candidate and to offer constructive alternatives. Spreading rumors about an opponent or other personal attacks have no place in our democratic system no matter how badly the candidate wants to be elected. The result is that many citizens are turned off by the entire election process. I believe that the best way to remedy this problem is to vote against any candidate who personally attacks his or her opponent regardless of party affiliation.

At a recent Lake Shores Association meeting Patsy Davis who lives on Clayburn made an appeal for anyone who finds some charms she lost near her home to please return these family mementoes to her. I told her I’d pass along her request to Waynedale News readers. Lake Shores neighborhood leaders can put you in touch with Ms. Davis.

Give me a call or send an email if you have any concerns or suggestions regarding city matters. Don’t forget to vote in the city elections on Tuesday, November 4th, 2003! If you’re not sure about the location of your polling place call the Allen County Election Board at 449-7329. Also, contact me if you’re over age 65 or disabled and you need an absentee voter application. Enjoy the nice weather while it lasts.
